Ep 193: Maximizing Teamwork in Developmental Disabilities Care

Hey everybody, it’s Tony again. I’ve been observing a lot of issues with teamwork, or rather the lack of it, lately. In our current generation, there’s such a strong emphasis on individual accomplishments that we often overlook the immense benefits of working as a team. I’d love to see more collaboration in the DD (Developmental Disabilities) space.

Paul and I have spent a considerable amount of time connecting various aspects of social media and production for numerous shows. In this process, we’ve collaborated with multiple agencies and noticed that some are hesitant to work together due to negative competition. Don’t get me wrong, I love competition and won’t hesitate to show I’m better at something, but I’ll also help others reach my level because I see competition as motivation.

That’s the mindset I want to foster in our group at Friends for Life. Often, there’s a misconception among staff that one person must outshine another by making them look bad. I don’t support this approach. Instead, we empower each staff member to become a leader in their domain, which in turn benefits the individuals we support.

Instead of trying to outwork someone negatively, let’s do it positively. There’s a saying I like: to build the biggest building, you can either tear down others or build yours bigger. I prefer the latter. So, today, I encourage you to work kindly with others and learn about their struggles. Understanding and collaboration impress more than working alone.
